Since 2014, Geregu has been a beacon of hope and progress in Ajaokuta and its environs. This narrative explores the profound impact of Geregu on the people, communities, and society, highlighting its sustainability drive and contributions to employment and community development.
Geregu’s commitment to community empowerment is evident through its strategic outsourcing of non-core operations such as civil security, gardening, office cleaning, and waste evacuation to locally based vendors. This initiative has created close to 70 indirect employment opportunities, significantly reducing unemployment and fostering economic growth within Ajaokuta Local Government Area (LGA). This aligns with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
Every year, Geregu distributes end-of-year and Sallah (Ileya) gift items, including rice and rams, to foremost traditional rulers and community members in Ajaokuta LGA. These gestures strengthen cultural ties and foster a sense of community and belonging, contributing to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
In 2014, Geregu empowered youths by distributing 12 grinding machines and 10 vulcanizing machines to various communities, including Adogo, Ajaokuta Village, Geregu Village, and Ukpake. Geregu has undertaken several infrastructure projects, including the renovation of classroom blocks at Community Primary Schools in Ebiya/Ogigiri and Adogo, and the construction of a hall with two classrooms at Community Secondary School for Geregu Village. These efforts enhance educational facilities, contributing to SDG 4: Quality Education. Additionally, the regular clearing of weeds along the express road from Ajaokuta town to the plant ensures road safety and security, aligning with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.
In 2019, Geregu constructed four portable motorized boreholes in Ajaokuta Native Town, Geregu Village, and Wimpey, and reactivated faulty water supplies to the New German Camp Estate and other adjoining estates. These projects ensure access to clean water, contributing to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, which aims to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
In 2022, Geregu donated relief materials worth millions of Naira to victims of the flood disaster in Kogi State. This humanitarian effort provides immediate support to those in need, aligning with SDG 1: No Poverty, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.
